AI summaries at the top of search results now blend recipes from many creators into single hybrid dishes, according to reporting by The Guardian in December 2025. The most famous failure so far came in May 2024, when Google’s AI Overviews told some people to add glue to pizza sauce.

May 2024: AI Overviews told some people asking how to keep cheese on pizza to add about an eighth of a cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce, according to widely shared screenshots. The advice traced back to a joke in a forum thread. In a May 30, 2024 blog post, Google acknowledged some odd and inaccurate Overviews, named the glue case, and said it was limiting satire, humor, and user-generated content.
July 2024: University of Minnesota Extension found an AI Overview about canning asparagus was incomplete. It left out the type of canner, the elevation, and the pressure, and was vague on pickling and headspace. Incomplete instructions can be unsafe even when they aren’t dramatically wrong.
December 2025: The Guardian reported on AI summaries blending recipes from many creators. “Frankenstein” here just means that blend.
Google frames Overviews as a “helpful starting point,” which is fair. It isn’t a dinner your household has agreed to.
What it means at your table
Somebody says just Google it. The phone serves a confident dinner with someone else’s ingredients and someone else’s steps. Halfway through, nobody recognizes the plate.

Keep a human decision at the center. Choose a theme, let the household vote, approve the plan, and shop one list. Then name a dinner out loud: pantry pasta, sheet-pan chicken thighs and vegetables, a black bean quesadilla stack.
