Sainsbury’s has added a new step between deciding on dinner and buying the ingredients. The UK supermarket announced its AI-powered SmartLists launch on October 7, letting shoppers turn a typed meal idea or a photo of a written list into a list matched to its products.
It’s part of a wider update to the Sainsbury’s app. For anyone who has stared at an empty shopping list after deciding what to cook, the appeal is easy to understand.
From dinner idea to trolley
According to Sainsbury’s announcement, shoppers can start with a meal idea, and SmartLists will connect the list with real Sainsbury’s products, including Nectar Prices. Items can then go into an online trolley. A built-in Product Finder also helps shoppers locate products in store.
That puts more of the planning and shopping process in one place. The feature belongs to Sainsbury’s shopping service, so the immediate news is for its customers; the broader idea is familiar wherever you shop.
Give one dinner a test run
A suggested shopping list is a useful starting point. Your household still supplies the context: how many people are eating, what is already in the kitchen and which version of a dish everyone likes.
For your next shop, choose one familiar dinner and compare the suggested basket with the recipe you actually use. Check the quantities, remove ingredients you already have and look at the total before ordering.
Say you are making a vegetable pasta bake. Do you already have the pasta? Does the recipe call for chopped tomatoes or a jar of sauce? Will the suggested quantity feed everyone at the table? A short check now gives each item a reason to be in the trolley.
You can use that same habit with a paper list or any shopping app. Start with one dinner you know well, then decide whether the tool makes your next shop easier.
